Oppenheimer, Ernest

(1880-1957)
   South African financier, of German origin. Born in Friedberg, Germany, he became a junior clerk in a London diamond firm. In 1902 he went to Kimberley, South Africa where he became mayor. In 1917 he founded a gold mining enterprise, and later the Diamond Consolidated Mines of South West Africa. In 1929 he became chairman of De Beers. He was knighted in 1921 and from 1924 to 1938 he was a member of the Union Parliament. He converted to Christianity.
